It is a dangerous supposition, but it appears the Canucks have solved what Tampa coach Guy Boucher called the “enigma” of Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas.
There have been moments in the Stanley Cup final when Thomas looks more like a whale — we’re talking the beached variety — than that logo on the front of the Vancouver jerseys. Thomas has been caught floundering and flopping outside his crease, after challenging shooters so aggressively that he leaves himself vulnerable to the faked shot or cross-ice pass.
When he recovers, and he has an uncanny knack for doing just that, he’s capable of diving to make a highlight-reel save, the type that is soul-destroying for an opponent. When he doesn’t, he can be hopelessly out of position, as he was on Alex Burrows’ overtime winner Saturday night. That goal put Vancouver up 2-0 in the final.
